Monday Quote of the Day on Giving

CS Lewis said:

“I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare.”

More than we can spare?  That sounds crazy, doesn’t it?  But thinking about it, could we not reword that to “more than we can easily . . . or comfortably spare?

The truth is, God keeps providing, even when we are stressed or otherwise blinded to His favor and provision.  He uses and enables the weak and when we are focused on Him, He touches others through us even (or especially) when we least expect or have any awareness of it.  Perhaps, then, this suggestion from Lewis isn’t so crazy?

Oh dear, that wasn’t what I wanted to hear… but then He gives me so much and I give Him so little. I think that CS Lewis spoke wise words, and so do you. Thankyou for the challenge.

    • Oh, sister! Listening and giving and doing His will isn’t easy but He just asked something difficult of me and with trembling hands I offered . . . and no sooner had the words left my tongue when the peace which is of Him came to me. This doesn’t mean He wants us to be improperly used and give foolishly, but I believe if we seek to know His will, He gives us the ability to know and to do. Bless you! Thanks for reading my blog and for blessing all of us by your comment!

  2. Martha, you’ve reworded this well. And, yes, it isn’t so crazy of him and you. I enjoyed thinking about this important aspect of life with you.
