I wonder too Martha. But, I think they do wonder. When my sister moved to Salisbury, Massachusetts, she noticed there were many Whip-poor-will birds and in the Spring when their chicks hatched they all would sit on her fence and practice the whip-poor-will song. The new chicks, however, could only get out the “whip” sound at first and would practice until they could get out the next syllable, “whip-poor” and would practice that while Momma coached and coached “whip-poor-will”. Correcting them all the while. It took them weeks before they got the whole three syllables out. They had to be aware they were not getting it correct. ??? Because they practiced until they sang it correctly!! By then they were flying and were off. Birds must be very aware when they are not singing well. (Cute story?) True.
