COOKING TRIVIA!

Don’t you love old recipes and old old cookbooks?  I do.  I have one I just got with some really “dark ages” recipes in it.  So much fun.  Kept reading about SWEET MILK and wasn’t sure what that was.  Researched it and discovered that back in the day, they couldn’t afford to waste anything and used both sour milk and fresh all the time.  So, when an old recipe says sweet milk, it simply means use the fresh milk and not the sour . . . it does NOT mean sweetened or sweatened and condensed milk.   Just wanted you to know!’

This is brilliant, Martha!! I just looked at your Corn Casserole again, and my mouth is watering–but you know what they say, “it always tastes better when somebody else makes it”, so I’ll be over!! Just teasing–love, Caddy!

    • Thanks. I am disappointed that nobody has yet popped a link to their own recipe pages or posts to this comment section but hopefully that will come. I know many on the US northeast are dealing with much more important things. My ultimate plan, assuming folks desire to take part and provide links to their own, is to promote our recipes on this page. When I have sufficient participation I will be redesigning this page somewhat “cookbook” style with links sorted into listings labeled as “snack” or “dessert” or “side dish” or “veggie” or “main dish” etc., so I encourage foodie people to please spread the word!

Your comments about sweet milk reminded me of my order in a restaurant when I first moved to Tennessee from Chicago. I asked for milk . The waitress asked if I wanted sweet milk. I responded that I did not want chocolate milk , nor did I want her to put sugar in the milk. When I said I wanted regular milk, she walked away quite frustrated . Years later I learned that buttermilk was the alternate to sweet milk.

I love vintage recipes and I am drawn to vintage times when people truly made the best of what they had.. We are so blessed to live in a time where you can borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor..
I will enjoy your recipe collection 🙂
