St Stephen – the First Martyr

December 26, 2011

Today, on this second day of Christmas and Boxing Day, it  is also the feast of St Stephen.  It is easy to forget this as we gaze at the remaining bit of tidying up from yesterday, wonder how to improve leftover mashed potatoes, poke a sly finger into the leftover onion dip, and decide on cookies for lunch!  St Stephen’s life was so much more than that.

Described as a man filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen was also named as one of the first deacons of the Christian church.  Among his gifts were preaching and healing.  The Stephen Ministry is named for him and is an organization of folks providing Christ centered care and support for those facing any of a vast number of life challenges.

St Stephen was dragged out of the city in which he was preaching about the Lord he loved and stoned to death, becoming the first Christian martyr.  I like to hope that, like Stephen, I would find the love and strength to pray for my persecutors.   This is exactly what he did as he was stoned to death.  He continued to profess his faith, his love of Jesus, and prayed for  his persecutors.

Miracle? Yes, God Still Heals – Ask My Sister!

July 17, 2011

What’s your opinion on the healing power of God today?  Lots of folks wonder about things they read in the Bible.  Many say “well, back in the days Jesus walked on earth . . . “ yet don’t believe “those things” still happen.  Do you?  There are many places in the Bible which tell us of the lame walking, the blind seeing, lepers going “clean” and water becoming wine and so many more amazing examples.  I’ve been reading a lot of books recently on the specific subject of prayer for healing.  I’m finding some who are very much against the notion that our Lord God still does these things all these years after Christ’s returned to heaven.   They don’t know Him and His power as I do.  I, like many others, have an entirely different view of His might and power and love . . . 1 Corinthians 12:9 tells us that through the gifts of the Holy Spirit the Lord works through us to heal the sick, saying “to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit” and yet it seems from my reading that folks still wonder.  I don’t have to think about whether He still performs miracles of healing.  I remember . . .

I was just finished with high school, and was 19 or so years of age.  I can recall an early summer day.  I was sitting under a tree writing poetry, as I so often have done.  My baby sister was in the playground with her friends climbing the “monkey bars” and having a great time.  Life was peaceful, the sun was shining, and there were no clouds in the sky.  Some things happen in your life which cause you to recall details like these which might otherwise have been long forgotten.  Why do I recall them?  Because suddenly my sister’s friends ran over to her as she lay on the ground.  She’d climbed high on the bars, as she’d done so many times before.  This time, she moved her foot the wrong way and fell to the ground many feet below the place she’d climbed up to just seconds before.  Seconds which felt like hours . . . and before long, she was in the emergency room at the nearby hospital.  “Here, look at the x-rays” the doctor told my parents, showing them the clear image of a broken bone – a broken back.  The silence was deafening as the truth set in and my sister’s life suddenly had changed dramatically.  That’s what we thought.  There was an even more dramatic change in store for her.

As options of treatment were explored over a period of days as friends and family, the church, and anyone we could think to ask prayed for my sister.  Something suddenly seemed different . . . she felt less pain, and so less pain was medicine needed . . . but how could this be?  The doctor felt her back with his hands.   Needing an answer, he ordered new x-rays of that same spot.  It is now many years later.  We are no longer children.  It’s been over 30 years since my sister climbed to the top of those monkey bars.  My Mom still has the x-rays and guess what that second one revealed?  It matched the first in every way but one.  The bone was no longer broken.  The power of prayer is amazing and the healing touch of our Lord, who lives in each one of us, was clearly demonstrated.   My sister was healed!   The x-rays hung on the wall of our church for a very long time.  Many came to believe in God and to know His love in a much deeper way as a result of those two x-rays!  My sister, her husband, and her houseful of children are thankful!
